O2 Mobile introduced a new mobile wallet service, NFC

The UK’s O2 Mobile is launching the first large scale test drive of NFC technology in the UK (Near Field Communication), which allows mobile devices to be used as a digital wallet for the transfer of electronic cash.
NFC allows for the transfer of data through devices within a short range, good for in-store purchases. The first test will include 500 participants over a 6 month period in the UK. The NFC technology allows O2 Mobile devices to be used much like an Oyster card. Even while using the NFC service, you can make calls or texts, so no need to hang up when it’s time to pay.

O2 launches HTC Polaris as Xda Orbit 2 with Wi-Fi

image O2 Germany today released the Xda Orbit 2, one of its most advanced smartphones yet. Better known as the HTC Polaris, the device boasts the same finger-oriented TouchFLO interface as the HTC Touch but includes both built-in GPS and Wi-Fi, allowing it to plot directions and connect to the Internet without using cellular service; it also brings tri-band HSDPA that connects to 3G networks both in O2’s European home and North America. Users on these high-speed networks can either upload photos taken from the 3-megapixel rear camera or participate in video calls with a front camera, O2 says.

In the German carrier’s shipping version, the Xda Orbit 2 comes with a 1GB microSD card preloaded with navigation software from GPS device maker TomTom as well as detailed maps of Austria, Germany, and Switzerland. Primary roads for Europe are also included for long-distance travel, the carrier notes.
O2 expects to carry the Orbit sequel in December for 99 Euros ($144) when paired with a two-year contract; other rates are currently unavailable. A North American version of the device is possible as the Touch Cruise but is unlikely to occur until 2008, when it has the potential to arrive for either AT&T or Rogers.

PDAs in Students IT Project

Very recently I had an opportunity to be involved as an External Examiner at one of the local universities. My task was to evaluate final year IT projects undertaken by IT students at the university. Interestingly, the theme of this year’s project was mobile commerce. I became very excited to know what the students had to offer.

As expected, majority of the projects involved developing applications that run on mobile devices such as handphones and PDAs. However, to my disappointment almost all of the projects make use of simulator to showcase their project, except one.

Nguyen Kong Minh’s Mobile Restaurant project stood out among all the others simply because he had a real PDA, an O2 Xda IIs. However, not only I was attracted to his real PDA as the medium to showcase his project deliverables, I was also amazed at how smooth his application was running on the sleek device which happened to have been reviewed at this site as well. The system even integrates to a live SMS notification system which is really impressive for a final year project by a university student. As expected, his project, and his O2 XdaIIs PDA, had been selected to be featured at the university technology exhibition shortly after the final year IT project evaluation.

I hope you enjoy these real shots of the PDA running Nguyen’s Mobile Restaurant…hmmm I am hungry.
