HTC’s latest model is a QWERTY slider

image

Looking very much like a close relative of the HTC Diamond and Touch Pro (think of it as their offspring), the new S740 smartphone is HTC’s latest handset that’s sure to inject some much needed style in the mobile market. Unfortunately, there’s no touch screen action with this one. Instead, it has a 12-key numeric keypad, sliding QWERTY keyboard for the two handed messaging experience and runs Windows 6.1 standard - so that kind of makes up for it.

The S740 features the same sleek and sexy design as the Diamond *drool*, which makes it just as covetable as the Diamond when it was first unleashed. And it’s definitely an improvement on the Touch Pro, which has a more basic and straightforward design. Expect internet speeds of up to 7.2 Mbps - that means up to 18 times faster than 3G - a 2.4-inch QVGA screen, a 3.2-megapixel camera, 256 MB flash and 256 MB RAM, a microSD slot, GPS and a range of other standard specs such as WiFi and Bluetooth. As well as all the above, the S740 supports POP3, IMAP and Exchange push email.

Expect to see it as of next month along with its inevitably costly price tag.

RIM will soon announce the new BlackBerry Kickstart 8220 / 8210, featuring Wi-Fi and GPS respectively. A full HTML browser with zoom options is also promised.
The anticipated RIM BlackBerry Kickstart 8220 and 8210 is getting closer to launch, as Expansys UK is preparing two unlocked models to be sold through its online store. The BlackBerry Kickstart 8220 will feature Wi-Fi connectivity, while the BlackBerry Kickstart 8210 will offer GPS navigation courtesy of BlackBerry Maps (compare).
Both models weighs in at 3.57 ounces and measures 4.03 by 2.02 by 0.68 inches. Since the BlackBerry Kickstart 8220 and 8210 are clamshell phones, they’ll feature two screens; an internal 2.6-inch 240 by 320 pixels screen, and an external 160 by 128 pixels screen.

Leaked Marketing Photos for BlackBerry Javelin Show 512mhz Processor, Lens Inside LCD?

image

The folks at Crackberry has obtained marketing photos of RIM’s new non-3G smartphone, the Blackberry Javelin, which gives us the down low on the details of the phone. Javelin will contain a 512 MHz processor, 256 MB of onboard flash memory plus a hot-swappable microSD slot, a hi-res 460 x 360 HVGA+ display, Wi-Fi with UMA and GPS, and a 3.2 megapixel camera. What briefly piques my interest though is the promise of "integrated lens/LCD technology." Does that mean a second camera hidden behind the display or is it just more ad speak for "the display is pretty"? The release date still seems to be slated for 2009.

Garmin’s Nuvifone delayed until early 2009

image

Somehow this doesn’t surprise us. According to a statement released ahead of Garmin’s Q2 earnings call, the company says it will be delaying the release of its Nuvifone from late 2008 until the first half of 2009. In the press release, the satnav-maker says it has "found that meeting some of the carrier specific requirements will take longer than anticipated," and claims it is "working toward making necessary design changes to meet their requirements." Here’s hoping the bump stems from these minor niggles with carriers, versus trouble with the phone itself, which was running only a partially operational OS last time we saw it.

RIM releases BlackBerry Media Sync with iTunes support

Research in Motion has been working hard over the past year or so to reposition its BlackBerry smartphones as consumer friendly. Continuing this, the company recently released its BlackBerry Media Sync application for Windows-based computers, allowing BlackBerry users to easily transfer multimedia content to their smartphones.

A key feature in the BlackBerry Media Sync is the ability to interface with Apple’s iTunes music organization software. The application currently only transfers music tracks that are not DRM-protected, but offers support for iTunes playlists and album art.

You can read more about the BlackBerry Media Sync here, or download it for yourself here.

BlackBerry JDE 4.6 beta released

image While the last of the OS 4.5 suite is still in the process of getting outed, a beta version of the BlackBerry Java Desktop Environment for 4.6 is available. New features include being able to integrate with the Messages app, SVG support, additional BlackBerry maps APIs and more. The BlackBerry Bold is coming very soon, and those developers who aren’t RIM partners have probably been in the dark for some time now. It really wasn’t long ago at all that the 4.5 BlackBerry JDE was released, so it wouldn’t be surprising to see some developers going right from 4.3 to 4.6. Hopefully with the latest JDE available, we won’t have to worry about too many of our apps borking out after an OS upgrade…
