HP iPAQ 900 Series Slips through the FCC

imageHP’s latest foray into the smartphone market, the iPAQ 900 series, has slipped through the FCC, packing dual-band HSDPA (850/1900MHz), which points towards AT&T being a possible carrier. The Windows Mobile 6.1 Professional-powered smartphone offers a QWERTY keyboard for convenient text entry, as well as Google Maps Mobile and Google Search pre-loaded.

A full office suite, including mobile versions of Microsoft Word, Excel, Powerpoint, and OneNote is included, as well as built-in WiFi. A microSD card slot is available for expanded memory, as well as a 3 megapixel camera with flash.

You can peruse the FCC filing here.

HP iPAQ 214 Enterprise PDA review

image In this age where being able to communicate with others is often top of the list of priorities, it seems a little strange that HP should continue to roll out unconnected PDAs. However the HP iPAQ 214 Enterprise is the latest update of the line aimed at IT professionals and those users who place versatility above connectivity.
The design is a standard PDA, so you’ll find a 4-inch touchscreen that has an impressive 640 x 480-pixel resolution and an ambient light sensor, so the screen is always at optimum brightness without impacting on battery life. Below this are four function buttons and a multi-directional button for navigating the screen.
The build quality is solid and due to the large screen it feels bulky in the hand. Weighing 190g, this isn’t something you’ll want to carry around in your shirt pocket too often.
When it comes to processing power, there is the Marvell 624MHz PXA310 Processor, which proved a little sluggish at times but once applications are open we found it ran smoothly. With 128MB of RAM and 256MB of ROM, there is space for your extra programs and files to be stored.

HP iPAQ 210

image HP ’s latest handheld, the iPAQ 210, has a spec sheet that’s remarkably similar: a Marvell 624-MHz processor, a 640-by-480-pixel VGA screen, built-in Wi-Fi and Bluetooth , and an SD card slot are among its features. Look more closely, however, and you’ll see some real improvements: The CPU is a next-generation PXA310 instead of the more common PXA270, the iPAQ’s Bluetooth spec is now 2.0, and the SD slot is SDIO-compatible. In fact, as it turns out, the iPAQ 210 is a significant leap from both the Axim X51v and HP’s own three-year-old iPAQ hx2795 (even more so with the latter, since the hx2795 had only a 320-by-240-pixel screen and 64MB of RAM). Despite some mixed performance results, for those who still need a standalone PDA—particularly in the enterprise market—the iPAQ 210 is tough to beat.

The iPAQ 210 is encased in black and gunmetal grey plastic. It measures 5.3 by 3 by 0.7 inches (HWD) and weighs 6.7 ounces with the battery installed. The transflective TFT screen, at 4 inches, is a bit bigger than the Axim’s 3.7-inch LCD. There’s a standard 3.5mm headphone jack, a built-in microphone, and a mini-USB port. On the front of the unit is a five-way control pad, four programmable buttons, a voice-recorder button, a power button, and a paper-clip-style Reset button.
