Garmin’s Nuvifone delayed until early 2009

image

Somehow this doesn’t surprise us. According to a statement released ahead of Garmin’s Q2 earnings call, the company says it will be delaying the release of its Nuvifone from late 2008 until the first half of 2009. In the press release, the satnav-maker says it has "found that meeting some of the carrier specific requirements will take longer than anticipated," and claims it is "working toward making necessary design changes to meet their requirements." Here’s hoping the bump stems from these minor niggles with carriers, versus trouble with the phone itself, which was running only a partially operational OS last time we saw it.

Copy Paste on the iPhone with MagicPad

MagicPad-inaction.jpg

MagicPad Software from Proximi has a key feature that will make all iPhone users happy, Copy/Paste. This app is quite similar to the notes tool that ships with the iPhone. It supports multiple fonts; rich text elements like underlining, italics, and strikethroughs plus the bonus copy/paste. A small toolbar is added to the onscreen keyboard and using a small loop magnifier you can highlight the text, then copy them into a virtual clipboard. From here it can be pasted into other notes and then sent. The only other thing…you can’t carry the clipboard to other apps.

RIM releases BlackBerry Media Sync with iTunes support

Research in Motion has been working hard over the past year or so to reposition its BlackBerry smartphones as consumer friendly. Continuing this, the company recently released its BlackBerry Media Sync application for Windows-based computers, allowing BlackBerry users to easily transfer multimedia content to their smartphones.

A key feature in the BlackBerry Media Sync is the ability to interface with Apple’s iTunes music organization software. The application currently only transfers music tracks that are not DRM-protected, but offers support for iTunes playlists and album art.

You can read more about the BlackBerry Media Sync here, or download it for yourself here.

RIM Launches Windows Live Messenger for BlackBerry

image As first announced in May, RIM has launched Windows Live Messenger for the BlackBerry family of smart devices, and in an interesting twist, the client does not use the data connection on the device but instead relies on the venerable push functionality that the company is known for. The client is otherwise identical in functionality to the desktop versison such as group chats, custom status messages, chat logging, display picture support, emoticons, and even sending/receiving of pictures and files. The client is now available from RIM in multiple languages including Arabic, Chinese (China), Chinese (Taiwan), Czech, Dutch (Netherlands), English, German, Hebrew, Hungarian, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Polish, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish, and Turkish.

Facebook Connect coming soon to an iPhone near you

image During their annual developers conference yesterday Facebook revealed that their newly minted Facebook Connect protocol would be made available to iPhone application developers sometime this Fall. What this means is that iPhone apps will have access to Facebook Connect, allowing them to utilize your Facebook account, profile, and user information. While it might disturb the more paranoid among us, it’s ultimately a good look for developers and users alike, as it allows both parties to access a wealth of information without having to re-enter and re-establish your identity across multiple applications. The real winner here, of course, is Facebook, as they move towards becoming a centralized repository of your online identity.

BlackBerry JDE 4.6 beta released

image While the last of the OS 4.5 suite is still in the process of getting outed, a beta version of the BlackBerry Java Desktop Environment for 4.6 is available. New features include being able to integrate with the Messages app, SVG support, additional BlackBerry maps APIs and more. The BlackBerry Bold is coming very soon, and those developers who aren’t RIM partners have probably been in the dark for some time now. It really wasn’t long ago at all that the 4.5 BlackBerry JDE was released, so it wouldn’t be surprising to see some developers going right from 4.3 to 4.6. Hopefully with the latest JDE available, we won’t have to worry about too many of our apps borking out after an OS upgrade…

SameCell updated, now featuring tabs and events

SameCell for BlackBerry

SameCell has a had a significant upgrade today, now packing tabbed browsing, event and location features, and including some extra functions if you happen to have GPS. Of course, the SameCell’s really great if you don’t have GPS, since its location-based services are all based on cell tower recognition. In fact, SameCell was the very first app I saw that use the technique, and since then Google Maps and even the BlackBerry Bold has started doing the same thing. They’ve also got a cool program where you get paid for discovering new cell towers not in their database. The core functionality of being alerted of buddy proximity remains - the only trick is getting your friends to install the app on their BlackBerrys. Go ahead and check out the new features or head on over to www.samecell.com/setup on your Browser to get started.
