Opera Mobile 9.5 for Windows Mobile better than Safari for iPhone !

Opera company offers Opera Mobile 9.5 now only to manufacturers to embed into handsets - the version for end customers is not available yet and it is unknown when it is coming.
We must admit that some web pages Opera Mobile 9.5 cannot handle at all even though the same pages work very well with NetFront 3.5 - and we have passed on to Opera this problem so they cannot pretend that they don’t know. However on HTC Touch Diamond Opera Mobile 9.5 that is built-in into this phone, has some fantastic features:
In HTC Touch Diamond the Opera Mobile 9.5 has 2 fantastic features: automatic orientation rotation that uses tilt sensor and, even better one: with the wheel under the display of this phone (this wheel is virtual, not physical - it is just a drawing but it works!) one can gradually (no hiccups!) zoom in and zoom out the page and size of the fonts! This zooming in and out is better than iPhone’s pinching because it is very precise and totally gradual.
We will publish yet a full review of Opera Mobile 9.5 and comparison of Opera Mobile 9.5 with Internet Explorer Mobile and NetFront 3.5, but in meantime here comes a comparison of Opera Mobile 9.5 with Safari in iPhone, where it is proven beyond doubt that Opera Mobile 9.5 running on Windows Mobile is better:
From the above video it should be clear that Opera Mobile 9.5 is both easier to use (better zooming with less effort) and objectively is more standards compliant that the iPhone browser.
While Opera Mobile 9.5 is only currently available on a few devices, such as the HTC Touch Diamond, HTC Advantage II and Samsung Omnia

  • Palm offers unlocked Centro for US

Palm this afternoon gave American cellphone users an extra choice with an unlocked Palm Centro for the country. The cellphone can be used with any provider without software restrictions and is the first that can easily be used with T-Mobile. Despite the absence of a carrier, the phone still comes preloaded with Google Maps and (new to the Centro) a My Location feature that gets an approximate position lock without needing a subscription GPS service.

Minus carrier branding and with a slightly different color scheme, the unlocked model is largely identical to the AT&T version with a 1.3-megapixel camera, microSD storage, and data over EDGE networks. Palm is already selling the new Centro for $299 without the subsidies that apply to locked phones and will hand out the updated Google Maps software as a free download for all existing Centros as of tomorrow.

Desktop Manager 4.5 hits the streets

The new re-skinned Desktop Manager that was scoped out back in April is now public, available at RIM’s Desktop Manager 4.5 download site. It really doesn’t look like much more than a facelift… There are a few tweaks to the Media Manager, and support for switching to and from Windows Mobile 6 devices, but meh. At least the software doesn’t look like something out of Windows 95 anymore.

    * Roxio(R) Media Manager for BlackBerry(R) smartphones: This tool now includes

    - a welcome screen that summarizes a user’s media library
    - a simplified tool bar and options
    - browsing abilities for documents and voice notes
    - improved import for media files
    - support for encrypted SD cards

    * Backup and restore: Enhancements for multi-service applications.

    * Installation: The installation has been optimized for options and simpler dialog screens.

    * Intellisync: Full support for Lotus Notes(R) 8 and support for Windows Mobile(R) 6 in the Switch Device wizard.

    * Language support: The BlackBerry Desktop Manager user interface and online help are now available in Arabic, Dutch and Indonesian.

    * User interface: The BlackBerry Desktop Manager user interface has been updated with a more user-friendly design.

    * Automatically update the latest Device.xml and Vendor.xml files

    * Support for serial devices and bulk calendar loading has been removed

RIM’s BlackBerry BIS v.2.5 Due On June 28, Will Include HTML Email Support

RIM is upgrading its BlackBerry Internet Service in anticipation for the next-gen of BlackBerry devices, and chief amongst the host of upgrades is the inclusion of native HTML email support – something users have been asking for since the dawn of the crackberry age. Finally, I will be able to expect the same psuedo-inspirational, gif-laden emails my parents already forward to me from all of my BlackBerry addict friends. I’m psyched. Version 2.5 of the BIS will also include OTA upgrades, calender improvements and several other as yet unnamed features.

Gracenote to rock your BlackBerry’s music files

After stumbling on a story about a recent Sony acquisition, I learned about Gracenote, which does a lot of work with digital music files, and apparently plays nice with BlackBerry. Back in the day I used to use Winamp which used Gracenote’s CDDB system to gather up information like album and genre to tack onto my files. You might remember hearing about Sony Ericsson’s TrackID program, which recognizes music that you just hold your phone close to, and is clearly powered by Gracenote. iTunes will be a great converging point for Gracenote and the BlackBerry Bold, but I’m really hopeful to see the other services Gracenote offers, like lyrics lookup, music discovery, and handsfree music navigation. Around CES time, it sounded like RIM was being troublesome about getting the service onto BlackBerrys, but I think it’s safe to say everyone would love to have this software preloaded on every device.

    Viigo launches open beta

The WES build of Project Tango has obviously undergone some work, and now we can try out the next beta of Viigo. Still no love for audio just yet, but we’re sure to see it in the coming weeks as bugs get fixed and features added. What is new, however, is a CFL channel, listing live scores and ticket purchasing via click-to-call for the sports fans out there. A lot of it was built off of the same power in the existing Sports channel, only a bit more focused. The Entertainment channel is packing Bplay goodies right now that link out to the mobile site to help you get your game on. The skeleton of a Stocks channel is there, giving us a glance at what to expect. A future version with graphs, trends and news all built in would be pretty sweet for any financiers out there. Weather and RSS are unchanged, but Sports got a few additions, like the Euro 2008 games that are entrancing footballers worldwide these days.
