HOP2001 released - a Windows Mobile phone with CDMA and HSDPA/CDMA in one device !

imageIn the year 2008 we will see the first Windows Mobile phones with dual-SIM capability, which effectively will make it possible to use 2 SIM cards in one phone. Since many people - in Europe and Asia particularly - use 2 SIM cards every day (one for work purposes and one for private usage, or one for work country and one for holiday country) - such phones will be very popular.
HOP2001 from Hop-on is not offering dual SIM capability but it makes it possible to use CDMA and GSM/HSDPA networks with one phone - vital particularly in USA where CDMA is very popular but useless in Europe and Asia where CDMA is not used at all…

ASUS chasing after Nokia with M930W smartphone

imageASUS is branching out into unfamiliar territory and will roll out a smartphone targeted at the very high end of its market, leaks from GPSandCo reveal. The M930W will borrow its cue from Nokia’s E90 Communicator and LG’s enV: despite resembling a standard candybar phone on the outside, the handset will open up to reveal a lengthwise QWERTY keyboard and a larger internal screen. It will even mimic a notebook PC and open at a 90 degree angle suitable for a desk as well as a full 180 degrees for handheld use, says the French site.

The phone would be powered by ASUS’ typical choice of Windows Mobile 6 Professional and will use both 3G (including HSDPA) as well as Wi-Fi for its Internet access. A 3.2-megapixel camera and a microSDHC slot that can accept at least 32GB of storage should also push the M930W past both ASUS’ earlier smartphones and competitors. No precise launch date is given, though the phone is due in the first quarter of 2008 and may be announced either at CES in January or at the Mobile World Congress in February.

RIM developing angled Blackberry keyboard?

image If you’ve been astounding friends and family with your thousands-of-words-per-minute typing skills on your Blackberry, RIM’s latest patent may come as a bit of a heart-stopper. According to "recent" filings from the smartphone manufacturer, a new style of keyboard is on the table which may move your familiar key placement into a slightly more angular position. The purpose of the proposed pad is ostensibly to improve accuracy by creating a more "natural" placement for your thumbs — though this concept might be a little more effort than required. Of course, since all kinds of crazy designs get filed with the patent office, we wouldn’t put too much faith in this seeing the light of day, though it is an intriguing look into RIM’s design process.
